On August 24th, ‘Premium Rush‘, a movie about a bike messenger trying to shake a dirty cop, will be released in the US. As an ex-messenger and a track bike fan, you would think that I would be super-excited, but honestly, I have mixed feelings about it. You see, 2 years ago, a friend of mine from NYC, Squid, asked me to train Joseph Gordon-Levitt to ride a track bike (or fixed gear) for his part in this movie. I agreed; however, the crew decided to have a spinning coach in LA take him through his paces on a single-speed with a freewheel. Well it turns out that he wasn’t really prepared for the action on set, and as a result, he crashed. Well, I’m not that bitter (though it might have been cool to train a rider for a movie): the trailer just makes this movie look really ridiculous – way over-the-top. I do know some of the stuntmen used for this movie, and of course, I am going to go see it… Should we organize a ride to it? Let me know if you’re interested.
